Education

Many of our research projects are in partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital, a teaching hospital where registrars on accredited surgical training programs with RACS are supervised and trained.

The HOPE Fund supports surgical training through fellowships, 18 month programs which provide specialty skills and contribute to higher global standards in surgical practice. Dr Keith Dindi, from rural Kenya, is one of the first graduates and is qualified as both a general and cardiothoracic surgeon. To facilitate training, we work with OESO to ensure worldwide collaboration and high quality training. With Melbourne as a key centre to offer training, the program will provide Dr Dindi with the necessary skillsets through six months of rotations in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and general / vascular surgery. During this period fellows learn about the assessment and management of individual conditions and participate in the operative management of patients under direct supervision.

The inaugural scholarship program

With our support, surgeon Mr Matthew Read completed a fellowship with a focus on robotic surgery at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and continued his research into oesophageal cancer. Since returning to St Vincent’s as a consultant surgeon, Matthew has been highly effective in contributing to the hospital’s surgical research program. He has established key international collaborations and furthered local research interests.

“The scholarship has given me unparalleled opportunities to learn from internationally renowned experts within my surgical specialty and to collaborate with leading researchers to optimise treatments for oesophageal cancer. I am fortunate to be back at St Vincent’s as a consultant surgeon where I can use my knowledge and international connections to advance research programs in the hospital, and enable opportunities for international surgical team exchanges.”
